The EDGE (Efficiently Developing Growing Enterprise) Award

The EDGE Award, the highest accolade for green SMEs, aims to identify environmentally conscious SMEs that have demonstrated leadership in environmental protection and changed the way they do business.

By recognising SMEs that are ahead of the curve in eco-friendliness, the EDGE Award aims to promote environmental awareness among the SME community and highlight the benefits of going green such as cost reduction and brand enhancement.

Why SMEs Need To Go Green

The recent spike in oil prices has put an upward pressure on business costs and a downward pressure on profits for many SMEs. Rising office rentals have also translated to higher cost of doing business. These inflationary pressures serve as a wake-up call for SMEs to examine every aspect of their business operations to identify ways of doing things better, cheaper and faster.

To safeguard their profitability and keep a lid on inflation, SMEs need to streamline their operations to increase productivity as well as adopt measures to reduce the cost components they have control over, eliminate redundancies and reduce waste.

Going green more aggressively by adopting processes that are energy-efficient and energy-saving can result in concrete savings, thus balancing cost increases brought about by high oil prices.

SMEs can adopt creative solutions aligned with their overall business goals to optimise their energy usage. For instance, employees can be encouraged to adopt ways to conserve energy by turning off unused electrical appliances. On the organisational level, companies can look at more substantive savings on energy usage by using renewable energy sources where feasible, deploying video-conferencing solutions in branch offices to cut down on business travel, installing intelligent lighting and air-conditioning control systems, improving building insulation, encouraging recycling to reduce the need to purchase new materials, using  solar panels which can be retrofitted onto existing buildings to provide another source of energy, etc.

As SMEs strive to expand overseas, it is also important for them to be a good corporate global citizen by striving to reduce the environmental impact of their operations and the products they create.
